Wood
Portraits

Creating portraits from wood is a fascinating and rewarding woodworking art form that combines the beauty of traditional portraiture with the natural warmth and texture of wood. I take great pride in crafting these portraits through a technique known as intarsia.

The foundation of any intarsia project begins with carefully selecting the right types of hardwoods. Locally sourced hardwoods are my preferred choice because they not only showcase the natural beauty of the region but also contribute to sustainability. Each type of wood offers a distinct color, grain pattern, and texture, allowing me to add depth and character to the portrait.

Before I start cutting or shaping any wood pieces, a detailed design is essential. I typically draw the family portrait by hand, capturing every individual's likeness. This sketch serves as the blueprint for the portrait.

Once the design is finalized, I begin the process of cutting and shaping using my scroll saw. Using a rotary tool and a micro sander, I shape each piece individually beofre proceeding to hand-painting.

Once the portrait is fully assembled, I focus on refining the details and ensuring a smooth transition between the various wood pieces. Sanding is crucial at this stage to achieve a flawless finish. Depending on the desired effect, I apply a protective finish oil to enhance the wood's natural beauty and durability.

Each piece is a unique work of art that captures the essence of the subjects while celebrating the natural beauty of wood. These heirloom-quality portraits serve as a lasting gift.
