Nevermore
Once upon a midnight dreary...
Nevermore is a handcrafted scroll saw artwork inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven and the dark, haunting atmosphere of his writing.
The idea for this piece came after watching The Fall of the House of Usher, which sent me straight back to Poe's work and sparked the idea of bringing one of his most recognizable poems into the world of wood.
I designed the piece myself, creating a scroll-sawn raven perched above the poem, suspended on clear acrylic standoffs. The raven was individually cut, shaped, and hand-painted, giving it a dimensional, almost sculptural quality while allowing the full poem to remain visible behind it.
The complete text of The Raven is laser engraved into the wooden backer, creating a subtle layer of detail that rewards a closer look. The raven sits away from the surface on standoffs, casting shadows across the words and adding depth to the composition.
The entire piece is framed as a finished work of art, bringing together scroll saw work, wood shaping, hand painting, laser engraving, and layered presentation.
I wanted Nevermore to feel like the poem itself: dark, atmospheric, and just a little unsettling.
It's one of my favourite pieces to make for the fall season, and one of those projects where the idea in my head somehow managed to survive the journey into actual wood.
