Good vibes and a solid day to everyone… except whoever thought PB plumbing was a good idea.
I’m currently held together by a single drywall screw and a roll of plumber’s tape — but hey, I fixed another leak!

ICYMI, our house (built in 1988) is full of PB (polybutylene) plumbing — a popular option in the 70s/80s with a tragic 20-30 year lifespan. Our “finished basement” looked great… until pinhole leaks turned it into a moldy waterfall. Now I’m slowly replacing it all with PEX in between work, parenting, and running my business.

The silver lining? We finally know why we kept getting sick.

This piece was one of the first designs I ever created for my "au pied d'une roche" piece, part of theAu Bord de l’Eau collection. I was recently commissioned to make it again, and it ended up feeling like a quiet reflection on how far I've come.

There are so many little differences between this version and the original. I didn’t plan them, but they showed up anyway—shaped by time, practice, and all the things I’ve learned along the way. It was fun to revisit something I once made with fresh eyes and new skills!

It reminded me that my only real competition is the artist I used to be.

The wings are made from red oak sourced locally from @thewoodsource .
Cut on the scroll saw and individually sanded from 180 to 220 grit, I applied @saman_stain black stain and finished them using @minwaxcanada glossy polycrylic 🖤

I didn’t know what I was signing up for.

When I said yes to making a piece for @makersforstjude , I thought I’d carve out a few hours, make something meaningful, and send it off with love.

I didn’t expect to spend over 40 hours on it. I didn’t expect to scroll and shape 307 tiny pieces by hand.
But as it came together, piece by piece, it became something more than just a donation. It became a reminder of why I started creating in the first place — to connect, to give back, and to put a little more good into the world.

This lion pushed me. It grounded me. It reminded me that showing up with your whole heart is always worth it.

I knew this piece was going to challenge me, but I didn’t realize just how far I’d push myself as a maker. Every single element of this guitar stand forced me to level up

I didn’t just pick new wood species, I had to figure out how to make them work together. I used my scroll saw in ways I’d never tried before. I designed parts that had never been done quite like this. Fingertips were the price to pay, haha.

But honestly? I loved it. Having full creative freedom meant I had to chase ideas that scared me a little. I always end up pushing myself when the reins are off, and this piece is proof of what happens when I follow that spark.

Where to begin.
I had no idea what this would look like when I first started. I had a rough design that confused anyone who saw it. But I knew what songs I was most inspired by and knew I wanted to create a functional piece of art.
Having recently started to learn how to play guitar, this Rock & Scroll challenge was the perfect opportunity to blend two passions.
Inspired by four songs from @thetragicallyhip and Gord Downie, I got to work.
The poplar Wheat Crown is based on the song Wheat Kings.
The walnut lyrics are from the classic Ahead by a Century.
The red oak raven wings are based on The Secret Path project by Gord Downie, where a raven follows Chanie. A story that gripped my heart.
The sunrise backer was inspired by Bobcageon. I kept picturing an early summer morning.
The padauk maple leafs are an ode to this band truly being Canadian icons in music
The feather, maple from padauk, purple heart, walnut, cumaru and ash are an ode to Gord, who is known for his feathered hats, based on the ones he wore during his last concert here in Kingston. I remember watching from Edmonton and feeling an entire country sing along.
The arch and frame are made of rosewood. The shape was inspired by a piece of artwork made for the hip by Pat Hamou.
My whole heart went into this project, and I am so proud of it. The late nights were worth it! My fingertips might not agree, but i had to make them stronger for the guitar anyway 🎸

Was it worth it?
If you had told me that I'd be spending that many hours on wheat blades a few weeks ago, I may have laughed it off.
But then I had to go and enter the Rock and scroll challenge by @makerschallengecentral and my ADHD brain decided to hyperfocus on wheat blades for days. 🌾🥴
Turning my scroll saw into a couple of different jigs, I was able to notch out each wheat piece without cutting through the top and squeeze the blades in, giving them a final round of shaping.
Are my fingertips still intact? No.
But my piece is just about done, and I can not WAIT to show you the final reveal this week!!

For context: I'm making a musically inspired piece by @thetragicallyhip for my entry in a scroll saw competition. The wheat crown I'm making is in homage to Wheat Kings.

Part 2 of the #RockAndScroll challenge is all about the wheat—cutting the crown and each blade by hand on the scroll saw, using a little jig I made from poplar.
The next part will put my scroll saw to the test.

This piece is inspired by four songs from The Tragically Hip and Gord Downie. This section in particular—featuring the wheat—reminds me of Brandon, Manitoba, a place I once called home, and that still holds a piece of my prairie-loving soul.

There’s a murder of crows that’s taken up residence near my house, and one in particular loves to perch on a dead tree, keeping watch like a shadow against the sky. It’s hard not to feel inspired when nature feels like it’s straight out of an Edgar Allan Poe poem.

This handcrafted Raven piece was born from my love of The Raven and the haunting beauty of Poe’s work. Though I’ve made it before, each variation has its own unique details—no two are exactly alike. Every piece is made to order and available on my website!

Meet the Phantom Ship, part of my #AuBordDeLEauCollection, inspired by my home, on the east coast 🇨🇦 This one in particular is about a folklore tale from Bathurst, New-Brunswick, but I'll be diving deeper into the story as I progress with this beast.

Every piece was cut on my Pegas scroll saw. I promised myself I'd properly document the work involved this time, as I'm now up to 5.5 hours in the #scrollsawartist bank for this one.

I’m finally bringing The Phantom Ship to life for my Au Bord de l’Eau collection, set to have a final release in 2025.

This piece is inspired by the haunting folklore of my roots—the story of the phantom ship has stayed with me for years, and I can’t wait to share the journey of creating this intricate work with you all. Every step will be steeped in the legend, the scroll saw work, and a whole lot of sanding (because, of course).

✨ New year, new burnout? Not this time. ✨
For the last decade (yes, decade... maybe more), I’ve been the CEO of Overcommitment™️ and President of Productivity Guilt™️. But this year? I’m clocking out of that hustle. Instead, I’m embracing rest and balance—like the hibernating bear I was clearly meant to be in these cold winter months. 🐻

2025 is the year of doing less, but doing it better. Projects will still happen, but at a pace that doesn’t make me look like a walking sawdust pile.

Picking up where I left off with the fireplace reno! 🔨 First, I tackled the drywall screws and tore out the remaining drywall. One side was deceptively easy—cue false hope—while the other had me fighting for my life on a step ladder covered in drywall dust. 😅

Once that was done, it was time for cement board (the less fun but necessary evil behind the stone). It was nasty to work with, but I got through it—and playing with the mortar was unexpectedly satisfying (except for the fact that I mixed way too much… oops).

Next came reframing! We’re moving the TV up to make room for a mantle, so I handled the framing while my amazing neighbor helped install an outlet directly behind the TV (because, let’s be real, a clothes hanger to plug things in was not the vibe).

Next steps: fire-code drywall, shiplap, a mantle, and stone! I’m honestly blown away by how much I’ve accomplished in just one week. Yes, I question my decision to start this during a busy maker season, but hey—aren’t all makers a little crazy in the best ways? The fireplace transformation is officially underway! 🎉
The original built-ins? Brown painted red oak (yes, brown), and they blocked the fireplace vents—so out they went during a last-minute WETT inspection a few months ago.
It’s been stagnant since then while I tackled other projects, but with holiday decorations piling up and nowhere to display them, I declared the end of holiday markets as the start of a full gut job.

We lovingly referred to it as the “70s strip club tile fireplace,” and, oh, it did not go quietly. Armed with a borrowed Bosch hammer chisel, a box fan from my very kind neighbor, a mallet, and some pent-up female rage, I had that tile gone in 1.5 hours! The setup and cleanup? WAY longer, but absolutely worth it.
